Thematic Dressing: Focus Your New-Season Shopping on Set Trends

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Okay, real talk: I know I’m not the most responsible shopper. I may have even lead a few of you astray. I am the devil on your shoulder (the angel being Suze Orman, I suppose), telling you that you don’t really need a savings account but you do need Charlotte Olympia slippers.

But listen, people, I am trying. Daddy didn’t just cut off the credit cards, he also cut off our access to the accountant who would cook the books. What? Accountant? I have no idea what you’re talking about. Did you just huff some Thierry Mugler Angel?

Anyway, I’m trying to be responsible. Gone are the days I’d just say “I’ll take it all, bitch!” at a store and take everything home to try on, promising myself I’d return the cast-offs but really just use the stacks of them as mixed-media bean bag chairs. What helps is getting to know your body and your style. I can look at something and instantly assess how it will look on me. I know I can’t do bodycon anything, nor can I do tenty trapeze dresses – a happy medium works for me. And I don’t even bother with maxi anything unless it’s worth the tailoring bill.

I’ve upped the ante this season, though. Not only am I shopping for my body and my sense of personal style (for example, I just will never be a jumpsuit fan), but now I am also shopping by my favorite trends. Listen, I love this spring’s cutout look as much as the next refined hoochie mama, but geometrically spliced pieces aren’t such a great deal for me since I can’t wear them to work anyway. And I die over how cool some girls look in sporty ensembles, but I just look like a gym class reject (which is historically accurate). Therefore, I’ve chosen two trends to shop, and lemme tell you something: it’s really helping me save. I’m buying black and white pieces, and grunge pieces. If it doesn’t somehow embrace one of those trends (trends I am obsessed with, and trends that are actually totally timeless – black and white happens to be tres-freaking-fashionable right now, but when will it ever be passe?), I don’t buy it.

I strongly encourage you to do the same – with whatever trends you want. In case one of the trends I picked does strike a fancy with you, here are some of my favorite pieces.

Street Style Tips from Sobbing On Fifth

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

We don’t know about you, but we take a lot of our inspiration from street style. That’s kind of its purpose, right? That’s why street style blogs exist – that’s even what a lot of Fashbo revolves around! We’re all inspired by each other. We all have our unique senses of style, but our ideas can so often come from seeing something amazing on someone else and thinking ‘I have to get that look – and then work it my  own way.’ We caught some inspiring shots outside of this past New York Fashion Week and shared them on our blog, and today we thought we’d pass a couple to you here with a suggestion of where to get a version of the key pieces in each outfit. That way, you can take that look and make it your own.

This girl is mastering the edgy/elegant clash. The studded leather jacket has definitely met its match with the ethereal chiffon maxi skirt. To make this look your own, try this studded jacket:

And add this chiffon maxi skirt:

And boom, instant downtown meets uptown look!

We’re obsessed with this girl’s braided updo and upholstery coat – very Almost Famous meets Heidi meets Brooklyn. Getting this look is a snap – keep your outfit simple, maybe your favorite neutral tee and skinny or boyfriend jeans – then add a beautifully patterned brocade coat like this:

Then braid your hair into pigtails and cross over the top of your head like a crown.

As you can see, mastering the street style look is easy-peasy. The street style blogs and shopping search engines like Polyvore.com are your best friends!

Handbags and Hugs,

Astor

NYFW 2013: Fashion Inspirations

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Just like an artist painting on a canvas or a actor embodying a character, fashion is inspired!

Fashion’s inspirations can appear from the levels and textures of mountains against a cloud covered soft skyline to the waves that roar within the oceans and pebbled sands. But, how do we target those fashion inspirations that create our personal style?  This year’s fall looks on the catwalk are full of texture and display an artistic fashion inspiration from the designers.

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

With the beginning of a new year, many women have this desire to change. Some want to become a new woman, with a new look, new resolutions and new clothes. Many wish to be the woman they were before losing themselves on the way. Others just wish to make some changes for the new year, to their appearance. Losing some weight, starting a program of training, changing hairstyle.

Be My Valentine: forget red, go green!

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Legion says that the remains of the great St. Valentine have laid in the Ireland city of Dublin since 1825.  St Valentine was the Roman Priest that went against the laws of cruel Emperor Claudius II.  The Emperor actually forbade marriages and engagements in Rome.  This was a crime which was punishable by death but St Valentine secretly performed nuptials for young couples in love.
A Green Heart
We often associate red roses, heart shaped candy boxes and love notes to the Valentine’s Day holiday.  But, it sounds as though green is the way to go when celebrating the historic meaning of Valentines Day.  So in honor of St Valentine’s efforts to keep love alive, we are introducing the color green during the month of February.
Green is a preventive color because its very familiar.  We see it all around us in our natural environments.  It’s mental and physical affects are soothing, relaxing, reduces anxiety and provides a sense of renewal.  Truly, this must be an association to love!
How to get the look:
February's Green List
Create your look by adding green to you wardrobe in February, not only is it the season’s trending color but it supports the idea of keeping love alive.   Consider adding the color through fashion wardrobe staple items like a green bodycon dress, green scarf, green jewelry, green Leather skirt, green bag, green legging or skinny jean.
Reader’s Corner:  Visit our gallery section and share your personal style.  Tell us about the green staple items you’ve added to your wardrobe.

Point Your Toes

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

From 2000 to 2004, I lived in Germany.  During that time I shopped the cobblestones roads of Europe like an excited child in a candy store.  My favorite shopping experience was visiting the massive amounts of shoe boutiques that lined the small streets of even smaller towns.  I love the idea of selecting unique shoes.  These shoes were often trends that had not caught on in the United States fashion trends at the time.  The majority of my selections were all pointy-toed shoes.
