Princessswag – A Fashion Design and Merchandising Student with Style to Spare!

Questions for Debbie
1.        Tell us about yourself.  Where are you from?  Can you draw fashion inspiration from where you live?
My name is Debbie.  I am 20 years old and from Boston.  I am currently a junior in college studying Fashion Design and Merchandising with a minor in Art.  I absolutely love it.  Boston is not one of those places that is really know for its style the way New York, Los Angeles, and Paris are etc…, but we have definitely come a long way.  There are more and more high end fashion stores opening up in the area and more and more people following fashion.  There is even a Boston fashion week now.  This year I went to a Betsey Johnson fashion show at Park Plaza.  It was not hosted by Betsey herself, but her clothing was featured.  Hopefully one day Boston will have a real fashion week.
2.        What is fashion to you?
To me fashion is about making yourself feel good.  I don’t think it matters what anyone else thinks about the way you dress; it is about how you feel.  Fashion is something that can make anyone more self-confident. I have always felt that if I looked good on the outside, I would feel a lot better on the inside.  This is one of the reasons I became involved in the fashion industry.  I want to help people around the world feel better about themselves.  Sometimes just adding little things to the outside can make all the difference.
3.        How would you describe your personal style?
Right now my style is a little bit girly and a little bit punk rock.  My favorite color is pink, so I tend to wear a lot of it.  Lately I have been drawn to a lot of blacks and grays, leather jackets, acid wash jeans, leopard prints, fur, studded belts, chains, knee high heeled boots, thick black eyeliner, red lipstick, the whole punk glam look.  I am constantly changing my style depending on the season and what is being put out on the runways.  Who knows what trend I will be into next?
4.        Describe your perfect outfit ensemble.
I think a perfect outfit to fit my style right now would be a fitted pair of destroyed skinny jeans, a loose scoop neck or v-neck tank top, a leather jacket, and a hot pair of heels or boots.
5.        Name your favorite and least favorite past or present fashion trend/fad.
Oh my god, shoulder pads.  I really do not understand why they are coming back into style.  They are so gross!  But since they are coming back, maybe my hatred towards them will change.
6.        Your fashbo profile states that you are in college studying fashion.  Describe a typical day of classes.  What type of classes does a design major take?  (Or maybe talk the readers through a typical day as a fashion major in college??)   Why did you choose the school you are attending now?
I attend Framingham State College.  My concentration at the Fashion Design and Retailing major at school is actually Merchandising, but every student in the major is required to take classes in both concentrations.  On a typical day, any fashion major could be taking classes in drawing, sewing, draping, economics, consumer behavior, different business segments of the fashion industry, textiles, color theory, fabric structure, history of costume, and fashion; this list could literally go on forever.  Even though my concentration is Merchandising, I am very interested in the Design aspect as well.  Because of this I have started taking Art classes to learn how to do fashion illustrations and hopefully one day learn how to sew better.  I chose Framingham State College because it has one of the best Fashion Design and Retailing programs in the state and has many connections with companies in the fashion industry.  I have learned a tremendous amount in the past two and half years and look forward to learning more.
7.        Any advice for others interested in studying fashion?
Always do your research.  Go online and look at all the fashion shows, read articles, blogs, anything about fashion.  Check out all the television shows, such as Project Runway, Styl’D, Mary Queen of Shops, and even Gossip Girl. You can honestly learn a lot just by paying attention. The fashion industry is very competitive and you really have to know what you are talking about to get in, so be aggressive and work hard.  I think it is very important to get a lot of experience in the industry.  I have worked at five different retail stores and each one has taught me so much about retail, fashion, and business.
9.        What is your favorite fashbo you posted?  Do you have a favorite fashbo that someone else posted?
“Attack of the BumpIt” is definitely one of my favorite fashbo’s that I have posted.  I just find the picture so funny, while still showing off the new hair trend.  My other favorite fashbo that I have posted is called “80’s Flashback.”  I actually wore this outfit to my friend’s party and I just really love the whole look and how the picture came out. I have a few favorite fashbo’s that other people have posted.   First I really love fashionfreak94’s (Anna) fashion illustrations.  They are amazing and I would love to see them all as real garments.  My favorite is the dress she named “Flowers”.  If Anna wants to make that for me one day to wear, I would totally rock it.  The other fashbo I like is by fashe4may.  It is called “Street High Fashion”.  The look is completely my style.
10.      Who is your favorite designer or designers?
I think that I have way too many favorite designers to name them all, but this season my favorite was definitely Chanel.  Karl Lagerfeld did an amazing job with the Ready-to-Wear pieces.  I like how the looks are still feminine, but they also have a huge edge.
11.      What is your favorite retail place to shop?  Online place to shop?
If you could not tell from all the Fashbo’s I have uploaded, I love Forever 21.  I worked there for a short period of time and became completely addicted.  Everything they have in the store is up to date fashion and it is so cheap.  I don’t mind buying a crazy garment that people think is weird or that might go out of style next season because most of the pieces there are only about twenty dollars.  It is seriously an amazing steal.
12.      What is your dream job?
My dream job would be a stylist.  I love putting together outfits for different events, whether it is for myself or others.
13.      You have a fashion blog @ http://swaggerofaprincess.blogspot.com How are you finding the process of writing a blog?  Any advice for others thinking about starting a blog of their own?
My blog was pretty spontaneous.  My friend was just like “Hey Debbie, I think you should write a fashion blog.”  So I did.  It has been really fun and I have been amazed by how many people read it and from all over the world too.  I love being able to write about my passion and being able to share it with everyone.  I didn’t start my blog to become famous, like Perez Hilton or the Fug Girls, but I would be lying if I said that wouldn’t be cool if it happened.  The only downside to my blog is when I don’t write a post for a few days I kind of feel bad for my readers because I have not given them anything new, so I always feel the need to keep adding more posts.  My advice to those who want to start a blog is to write about something you love and if you really want it to be read, make sure you advertise it on MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter.  Social Networking has brought so many people to my blog.
14.      Were you able to learn anything from the last blog post from MsGlam710? http://www.fashbo.com/blog/2009/11/14/msglam710-a-model-with-style-and-fashion-savvy/  If so what was it?
Wow, she is so down to earth. I love it.  She seems to have a learned a lot about the modeling industry and she loves doing it. I love that she considers fashion an art because I do too. We also had a bunch of other similar answers (she also said that about Ambika), for instance we both love Chanel and Forever 21.
